There’s a lie a lot of us have believed for a really long time.

We think we have to get our lives together before we can come to God.

Stop drinking.

Stop cussing.

Stop sleeping with the wrong person.

Stop being angry.

Get your marriage fixed.

Get your finances together.

Get your doubts under control.

Start reading your Bible.

Start praying.

Then… maybe… you’ll be ready to come back.

But that’s not how Jesus works.

Jesus never said, “Clean yourself up and then come find Me.”

He said, “Come to Me.”

That difference matters.

Because some of you aren’t running from God.

You’re hiding from Him.

And there’s a difference.

You’re hiding because you’re ashamed.

You know what you’ve done.

You know what you’re still doing.

You know the thoughts you have.

You know the questions you’re afraid to ask.

You know the parts of your story you don’t want anybody else to know.

And somewhere along the way, you started believing that God knows all of it too…

and that He must be disappointed.

So you stay away.

You tell yourself you’ll come back when you’re better.

When you’re stronger.

When you’ve conquered that habit.

When you’ve figured out what you believe.

When you feel worthy again.

But here’s the beautiful thing about Jesus:

He already knows.

He knows the whole story.

And He still comes looking for you.

Think about the prodigal son.

The son had made a mess of his life. He had taken what belonged to him, walked away from his father, wasted it, and eventually found himself sitting in a pigpen.

And when he finally decided to go home, he had a speech prepared.

He was going to tell his father how unworthy he was.

He was going to ask to become a servant.

He had already decided he didn’t deserve to be called a son anymore.

But before he could finish his speech, his father ran to him.

He didn’t make him stand on the porch and prove he had changed.

He didn’t make him spend six months rebuilding trust before embracing him.

He didn’t say, “Come back when you’ve got your act together.”

He ran.

He embraced him.

He welcomed him home.

That’s grace.

Grace doesn’t pretend the mess didn’t happen.

Grace simply refuses to believe the mess is the end of your story.

Maybe you’ve been told that God is waiting for you to become the person you’re supposed to be.

But what if God is inviting you to come to Him exactly where you are?

Not because He wants to leave you there.

Because He loves you too much to leave you there.

Jesus doesn’t say, “Fix yourself.”

Jesus says, “Follow Me.”

And those are two very different things.

One puts the responsibility entirely on you.

The other begins with relationship.

You don’t change so that Jesus will love you.

You begin to change because you discover that you are already loved.

You don’t obey so that God will accept you.

You learn to trust Him because He has already welcomed you.

You don’t clean yourself up so you can come home.

You come home…

and let the Father begin putting the pieces back together.

So if you’ve been waiting until you’re better before you come back to God…

stop waiting.

If you’ve been afraid that your questions disqualify you…

bring them.

If you’ve been ashamed of what you’ve done…

bring it.

If you’ve walked away from church because people made you feel like you weren’t good enough…

you don’t have to pretend that didn’t hurt.

If you’ve spent years running from God because you thought He was angry with you…

maybe it’s time to discover who Jesus actually is.

You don’t have to clean yourself up to come home.

The Father isn’t standing on the porch with a checklist.

He’s watching the road.

And if you’re ready to take even one step toward Him…

I think you’ll discover He’s been coming toward you all along.
